CHICAGO -
Krystina Herzog collected wins on both boards and a host of swimmers had strong days as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's swimming and diving team picked up a pair of wins Saturday afternoon in Chicago. The Panthers defeated Horizon League rival UIC by a 189-106 margin and downed Evansville by a 154-144 count. The only blemish on the day was a 161-136 defeat at the hands of Northern Iowa.
Herzog took top honors on both 1m and 3m Saturday, scoring 265.25 on the 3m board and 233.15 on the shorter board. Herzog won the 1m for the second-straight week, after also collecting top honors last Friday in Milwaukee against Wheaton.
The other four divers followed Herzog's lead, as UWM nearly had a sweep of the top four places on both boards. On 3m, Erin Blemberg finished second with 233.00 points, followed by Hannah Burgard in third with 233.70 points. On the 1m board, Erin Hallen finsihed second with 232.80, while Burgard was fourth with 211.40 points.
The divers weren't the only ones to get into the act, however, as several swimmers had strong showings as well. Beth Watt led the charge with three top-three finishes, finishing second in the 100 and 200 butterfly and finishing third in the 100 freestyle. Watt finished the 100 fly in 59.67 and had a time of 2:11.13 in the 200 fly. In the 100 free, Watt finished in 55.11.
Amanda Chan and Patricia Frank also had a pair of top-three finishes. Chan was second in the 100 and 200 breaststrokes, finishing the 100 in 1:08.31 and the 200 in 2:25.42. Frank wound up third in both the 100 and 200 backstrokes, finishing the 100 in 1:03.88 and the 200 with a time of 2:17.19.
Sarah Walby added a second-place mark in the 200 free with a time of 1:59.14, while Sarah Caldwell and Jen Kedinger added third-place finishes. Caldwell was third in the 100 breast with a time of 1:08.86, while Kedinger finished the 500 free in third place with a time of 5:16.92.
The Panthers return to Milwaukee Sunday to host Western Kentucky at the Klotsche Center Pool. The meet is slated to begin at noon.
