CHICAGO - Eric Goerdt allowed just one run in 7 1/3 innings and UWM hit two home runs into the teeth of a 20 mile per hour wind as the Panthers beat Wright State, 5-1, in a Midwestern Collegiate Conference Tournament game Friday afternoon.

Goerdt (5-1) allowed nine hits and did not walk a batter. Matt Freisleben, who set a school-record by making his 27th appearance, got the final five outs to record his first save.

The Panthers have now allowed just one run in 18 innings in the MCC Tournament.

"When you come into this tournament, you know you have to pitch well," head coach Jerry Augustine said. "Against the wind it's always tough. Eric pitched very well. He hit his spots well, and he did not walk anyone. And Freeze has done that for us all year long."

UWM (37-16) scored three runs in the fourth inning. John VandenBerg started the inning with a double, Steve Guden followed with an RBI single, and, after Dave Pudlosky doubled, Mike Oiler drove in a run with a ground out.

The Panthers added single runs in the sixth and eighth on solo home runs by Pudlosky and Guden. Guden's traveled out to center field into the teeth of a wind blowing straight in.

"We needed those runs," Augustine said. "Those were big runs. When we got to five runs, we could relax just a little bit."

Wright State (31-27) scored its lone run in the fifth when Trent Matthews doubled and Chris Tuttle drove him in with a single.

Guden and Pudlosky had two hits apiece for the Panthers, who advance to a game at 11 a.m. Saturday against UIC. The winner advances to the championship game Sunday, while the loser will play again Saturday evening.
