The UWM baseball team batted around in both the third and fourth innings en route to a 13-5 victory over Northwestern Tuesday afternoon.
The Panthers (25-13) pounded out 15 hits, including two home runs, in claiming just their second win ever over the Wildcats (20-27).
Trailing 1-0 entering the third, UWM's Steve Guden reached on an error to start the inning. One out later Matt Houk singled before Jason Crawford drove in the tying run with a sacrifice fly. Scott Gillitzer tripled in Houk, Eric Goerdt singled in Gillitzer, and John VandenBerg doubled in Goerdt to give the Panthers a 4-1 advantage.
In the fourth, Derek Daggett and Houk each reached on singles before Gillitzer drove in the first run with a double. Goerdt drove in another run on a sacrifice fly, and Dave Pudlosky and Guden each drove in runs with two-out singles.
UWM added three more runs in the fifth on a solo home run from Houk and a two-run blast from Goerdt to put the game away.
Aaron Bushong (2-1) worked 5 2/3 innings to claim the win, while Rob Erickson, Matt Freisleben, and Quintin Oldenburg pitched scoreless relief over the final 3 1/3 innings.
Houk had three hits to lead the Panther offense, while Gillitzer, Goerdt, and Guden had two hits apiece for UWM.
The Panthers return to action Wednesday afternoon, facing UW-Parkside in a doubleheader. The first game begins at 2 p.m.
