LINCOLN, Neb. -
The UWM baseball team saw its school-record nine-game winning snapped by nationally-ranked Nebraska Wednesday afternoon, as the Cornhuskers swept a doubleheader from the Panthers, 16-2 and 16-10.
In game one, Nebraska (19-7) scored four times in the first inning and never looked back. The Huskers, ranked eighth in the nation by Baseball America, scored seven more times in the second and five more times in the fourth. UWM could muster just a two-run homer from John VandenBerg in the second inning.
Mike Oiler (2-3) gave up nine runs in just 1 1/3 innings of work to take the loss.
In game two, the Panthers rallied from deficits of 10-0 and 12-2 to pull within 12-9 after 6 1/2 innings. But, the Huskers scored four times in the final two innings to put the game away.
Scott Gillitzer went 3-for-4, including a two-run homer, to lead the Panther offense. Darin Haugom, who saw his 14-game hitting streak broken in game one, went 3-for-5 with two RBI for UWM.
Quintin Oldenburg (2-2) took the loss for the Panthers, allowing four runs in 2 2/3 innings.
UWM (9-7) returns to action Tuesday, traveling to Northern Illinois for a single game with the Huskies. The Panthers begin conference play April 7 and 8 at Detroit.
