EVANSVILLE, Ind. -
The University of Evansville used a pair of late-inning rallies to sweep a doubleheader from UWM, 7-6 and 7-5, Saturday afternoon at Carson Center Field.
In game one, the Purple Aces (8-4) scored a run in the bottom of the ninth inning for the win. Wes Carroll was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on a Brian Wegman sacrifice fly.
Earlier, UWM (0-5) had built a 5-0 advantage after two runs in the second inning and three more in the third. Paul Archambault singled in two runs in the second, and Scott Gillitzer had the lone RBI in the three-run third. Evansville then fought back with two runs apiece in the third, fifth and seventh innings before their game-winning rally in the ninth.
Mike Oiler (0-2) took the loss for UWM, tossing a complete game.
In game two, Evansville overcame three Panther home runs - including two from John Vandenberg - to claim the victory. Vandenberg's first home run - a solo shot in the second - gave UWM a 1-0 advantage. His second homer - a two-run blast in the third - followed a Darin Haugom home run and helped push UWM's advantage to 5-1.
But, Evansville rallied off UWM starter Rob Erickson and Panther relievers Matt Freisleben (0-1) and Jason Crawford. The Purple Aces scored three runs in the seventh inning on just one hit, but a crucial UWM error helped spark Evansville's offensive outburst.
The Panthers and Purple Aces will wrap-up their three-game weekend series with a single game Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. CST.
