MILWAUKEE -
The UWM men's basketball team limited Illinois-Chicago to 33 percent shooting for the game and just five points in the first 11:30 of the second half en route to a 70-49 win Saturday night at the Klotsche Center.
The Panthers led 28-23 at halftime, but opened the second half with a 22-5 run and cruised from there. Clay Tucker scored 18 points and Jason Frederick added 17 to lead UWM to its third straight win.
UWM's play inside made the difference in the second half, as the Panthers went to the free throw line 21 times and outrebounded the Flames 22-5.
"We gave up too many rebounds, gave up too many second chances," Frederick said of the first half in which UWM allowed nine offensive rebounds.
"We were determined not to let them get any second-chance opportunities," Tucker said. "That was what coach really stressed for the second half in the locker room."
UWM (13-10, 5-5 MCC) allowed the Flames (9-14, 3-7 MCC) to shoot just 27 percent in the first half, and the Panthers held an opponent under 50 points for the second time in league play.
"Defensively, without a doubt, the things they got us on at their place, we took that away," UWM coach Bo Ryan said. "I thought we played well defensively, and offensively, in that one stretch, I thought we really put some things together."
"I thought in the first half it was going to be a game, but it turned out not to be a game," UIC coach Jimmy Collins said. "I really thought in the second half we got a little selfish and they turned up the intensity. They played well and we didn't."
4,112 fans saw the game at the Klotsche Center, the sixth-largest crowd in the arena's history.
UWM returns to action Thursday night, visiting Butler. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. CST, and the game can be seen on TV-41 in Milwaukee.
