UWM Rolls Past Cleveland St.

Nov. 2, 2001

Final Stats

MILWAUKEE - Chrissy Schurla had 12 kills and Sarah Potts added nine as UWM rolled to a 30-24, 30-22, 30-17 win over Cleveland St. Friday night at the Klotsche Center.

Four other players had five kills and all 14 players dressed for the match played as UWM (15-6, 10-2 Horizon) claimed its 53rd win in its last 55 home matches.

Lori Betchker had nine kills to lead the Vikings (6-15, 1-10), who hit just .043 for the match and committed 12 service errors.

"We did what we had to do to win," head coach Kathy Litzau said. "Our depth really showed through after we had some people struggling early in the match. We got the entire team on the floor."

The Panthers controlled all three games of the match. UWM built an early 10-5 advantage in game one and maintained the advantage through much of the game. Cleveland St. pulled within 23-22 on a service ace from Michelle Iafigliola, but the Panthers scored the next four points on a service error, an attack error and kills by Tari Boutin and Carly Allison to help regain control of the game.

In game two, UWM maintained a small lead through much of the early portion of the game before pulling away. The Panthers extended a 13-12 advantage into a 20-15 lead, then pushed the lead to 22-16 on a Schurla kill. Cleveland St. again pulled within three points, but the Panthers finished the game by scoring seven of the final nine points, closing out the game on a kill by Schurla.

In game three, the Panthers never trailed, leading 9-5, 16-9 and 23-12 in easing to the match-clinching win. Litzau cleared the bench in game three, allowing Kristen Krubsack and Katie Krueger to each pick up kills on the way to the win.

"It was nice to get everyone involved," Litzau said. "We haven't had many opportunities to do that, and I was real happy that when we did sub, they really went after it. Kristen had a nice kill and Katie had the one to win in at the end."

UWM returns to action tomorrow afternoon, hosting Youngstown St. at the Klotsche Center. The Senior Day match begins at 2 p.m.
