Charleston, Ill. - The UWM baseball team split a doubleheader with Eastern Illinois on Wednesday. Eastern Illinois won the first game, 3-0, but UWM rallied to win the second game, 12-8.
In the first game, UWM outhit Eastern Illinois, 5-4, but was unable to score a run. Corey Clemmons pitched five strong innings, allowing just two earned runs and four hits, but picked up the loss.
In the second game, Darin Haugom led off the game with a single and then stole second base, giving him 49 in his career and tying him for the school record. Matt Houk followed with a single, and then Scott Gillitzer hit a home run to right field to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead.
Eastern Illinois scored two in the second and one in the third to tie the game, but the Panthers took the lead for good in the fourth inning. A three-run double by Brett Huebner sparked a four-run inning, giving UWM a 7-3 lead.
UWM scored five insurance runs in the seventh inning. Paul Archambault's two-run single started the scoring in the inning.
Matt Freisleben pitched an inning of relief to pick up the win and improve to 2-2 on the season.
The Panthers are back in action on Friday when they play host to Detroit. Gametime is 7 p.m. at Henry Aaron Field.
