Lincoln, Neb. -- The UWM baseball team defeated No. 15 Nebraska, 9-7, on Tuesday, marking the second time this season that the Panthers have upset a ranked team.
UWM (16-17) jumped out to a 9-0 lead on the Huskers after four innings, and withstood seven straight Nebraska runs. The win broke a 15-game Husker winning streak, a 13-game home winning streak and the longest win streak in Big 12 history.
Panther starter Mike Oiler got credit for the win and improved to 2-3 on the season. He pitched four and two-thirds innings, allowing five hits and five earned runs.
UWM scored early and often in the game, starting with two runs in the first inning. Eric Goerdt had a run-scoring double and Chad Sadowski had a run-scoring single in the inning. Goerdt finished the day 3-for-5 at the plate with two doubles and two RBIs and pitched the ninth inning for his second save of the season. The Panthers added five runs in the third inning, capped off by Todd Ludwig's three-run home run to right field, and two more runsin the fourth inning. That's when Nebraska reliever Trevor Bullock came into the game. Bullock walked the first batter he faced, but then retired the final 16 batters of the game, freezing the Panther offense and allowing a Husker comeback.
Nebraska scored five runs in the fifth inning and one in the seventh for a 9-6 score. In the ninth, a single, an error and a walk set up one Nebraska run, but Goerdt initiated a game-ending double play to erase the Husker threat.
The win was the Panthers' second victory over a ranked opponent this year, on March 29, the Panthers defeated a nationally-ranked Notre Dame squad, 17-3. The Panthers defeated No. 1 Rice last year, 8-4.
