Panther Baseball Defeats Notre Dame, 14-3

March 29, 2000

Box Score

South Bend, Ind. - The UWM baseball team exploded for six runs in the ninth inning to seal a 14-3 win over Notre Dame, a team that ranks as high as 17th in one national poll.

The win moves UWM to 7-12 on the season and was the Panthers' first over the Fighting Irish since current Panther Andy Neary pitched to a 2-1 win in 1997.

Senior righthander Chad Sadowski picked up the win for UWM and etched his name in the UWM record book. The win is the 16th in his career and tied him with Mike Casper (1995-98) for the all-time Panther record. Against the Irish, he allowed seven hits and two earned runs in five innings.

Sophomore Matt Friesleben pitched two innings, senior J.J. Kotarak pitched a third of an inning and sophomore Quintin Oldenburg pitched one and a third innings to close out the game.

The UWM offense was led by junior shortstop Scott Gillitzer, who turned in a 5-for-6 day at the plate. He was one of five Panthers to drive in two runs, along with senior center fielder Darin Haugom, senior catcher Todd Ludwig, senior third baseman Steve Tylke and junior first baseman Eric Goerdt. Haugom and Goerdt each hit solo home runs in the game.

The Panthers scored three runs in the third inning to take a 3-2 lead. The Irish added a run in the fourth, but UWM scored three in the sixth, one in the seventh, one in the eighth and six in the ninth.

The Panthers play at Valparaiso on Thursday.
