Indianapolis, Ind. - Teri Stoltenberg scored 16 points, but it was not enough to lead the UWM women's basketball team to victory over Butler. The Panthers fell, 82-74 at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Saturday.
The Panthers held a six-point halftime lead, 39-33, including four three-pointers by Stoltenberg. UWM led by as many as eight points in the second half, but the Bulldogs came back to tie the score, 74-74, with 2:00 minutes remaining.
The Bulldogs broke the tie with a three-pointer by Dorcas Lawson, and held UWM scoreless the rest of the way.
"Butler didn't have anything to lose," said UWM coach Sandy Botham. "The bottom line is we didn't get it done on defense. We can't rely on our offense, especially on the road."
To go along with Stoltenberg's team-highs of 16 points and five steals, three other Panthers scored in double figures. Jessica Wilhite scored 14 points. Daryl Schaffeld scored 12 and passed for a team-best six assists, and Kelly Lubbers added 10 points. Latasha Love proved to be a spark off the bench with eight points.
"Something we've been telling the seniors (Lubbers, Love, Schaffeld) is that this is their last opportunity to play at these places," said Botham. "This is their last game here. They've been playing their hearts out."
UWM returns home in MCC play on Thursday when Detroit plays at the Klotsche Center. Gametime is 7:00 p.m.
