UWM Women's Basketball Falls in Green Bay

Feb. 19, 2000

Green Bay, Wis. - The UWM women's basketball team cut a 16-point second-half deficit to two points, but could not take away the lead or the win from the UW-Green Bay basketball team. The first-place Phoenix posted a 75-64 win on Saturday at the Phoenix Sports Center.

UWM falls to 13-10, 7-3 in the MCC. UWGB improves to 15-7, 9-1 in league play, with UWM handing the Phoenix its only loss of the season in conference play.

The Phoenix built a 16-point halftime lead, 47-31, as it forced UWM into 13 turnovers in the first stanza

"They had revenge on their minds," said UWM coach Sandy Botham. "We played on our heels a little bit in the first half, and didn't take care of the ball."

UWM came out a different team in the second half, as it scored 10 of the half's first 12 points to cut the deficit to eight, 49-41, with 16:00 minutes remaining in the game. Six minutes later, UWM trimmed the deficit to just two points, 56-54. UWM outscored UWGB 21-9 in the first 10 minutes of the half.

"We tried to dig ourselves out, but it was too late," said Botham.

The Phoenix responded by going on a 17-6 run during an eight-minute span starting at the nine minute mark.

Corrin Von Wald led the Panthers with 16 points and seven rebounds. Nicole Luchsinger came off the bench to score 10 points and collect six rebounds. Teri Stoltenberg added 10 points playing in front of her hometown crowd.

"We can learn from this and adjust," said Botham. "Now our players know what to expect next time. Games are learning experiences. Now we can move forward."

The second-place Panthers play Loyola and UIC on the road on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.
