Milwaukee - The UW-Milwaukee Panthers continued their outstanding play in the MCC Saturday, with a win over the Cleveland State Vikings, 87-66, at the Klotsche Center.
Senior guard Daryl Schaffeld became the MCC's most prolific long-range shooter in history with a first half three pointer. The shot gave her 207 for her career, which surpasses Joanne McCarthy for first place on the all-time list. Schaffeld finished with 11 points and tied for a team-high six assists.
"It's nice to break the record and achieve personal accomplishments, but what is important is that we got the win," said Schaffeld of her record-setting shot.
Six different UWM players produced double-digit scoring in the win, including all of the Panther starters. The team was led by sophomore guard Corrin Von Wald's second career double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds, which ties her career high for boards. Von Wald also added a team-high six assists in the game.
The Panthers, winners in seven of their last eight games, came out with a charged offense in the first half that led by 15 at the break, 40-25. UWM's defense also came with its best game, holding the MCC's top two scorers, Audra Cook and Mohogany Green to just five and two points respectively before the break.
In the second half, the Panthers were able to hold off a Viking run that would bring them as close as seven points with about 16 minutes left in the game. But from there on out, it was all UWM. The Panthers went on to outscore the Vikings 41-27 the rest of the way.
"This team has the potential to really succeed," said Panther head coach Sandy Botham. "We control our own destiny from here."
In typical UWM fashion, the Panthers finished the game with seven consecutive free throws, including five from Von Wald and two from junior guard Teri Stoltenberg who had 10 points in the contest. Stefanie Kaufmann chipped in with 14 points and seven rebounds, Kelly Lubbers added 12 points of her own and Nicole Luchsinger pitched in with 10 points off the bench.
UWM travels to Green Bay to face off against the Phoenix next Saturday at 3 p.m.
The Panthers look to take their successful conference play into the post season, but refuse to stop there. Said Botham, "We are starting to put it together, but were hungry and eyeing for a championship."
