MILWAUKEE - The UW-Milwaukee women's basketball team won their fourth consecutive game by defeating the UIC Flames, 62-54, at the Klotsche Center Monday night.

Behind the strong guard play of senior Daryl Schaffeld, who scored a game-high 17 points, the Panthers were able to douse the Flames.

In the first half, the Panthers' (10-8) guards were able to keep the Flames shooters in check with help off the bench from freshman guard Jessica Wilhite who scored 10 in the half and 15 in the game.

"Any team in the country will tell you it's hard to play with a lead," said UWM head coach Sandy Botham. "You have a tendency to relax."

No one in the gym, however, was shooting as hot as Chad Olson was. At the half, Olson hit three half-court shots to win a framed picture of the Klotsche Center floor and two years of free tuition from the University.

Despite runs by the Flames (6-13) in the second half that actually gave them a lead of, 51-50, the Panther shooters got themselves out of trouble with three-point shooting.

"We told our kids to just cut their heads off and shoot the ball," said coach Sandy Botham.

Jessica Wilhite hit a three to give UWM the lead for good at 52-51 and a three-pointer from junior guard Teri Stoltenberg with the shot clock winding down and 40 seconds remaining in the game iced it for UWM.

The Panthers are now second in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference with a record of 4-1, only a half game behind conference leader Detroit.

UWM takes the road to face off against conference foe Wright State on Thursday at 7 pm.
