HONOLULU, Hawaii - The UWM women's basketball team posted a come-from behind overtime 66-64 win against Oregon State during the final day of the Hawaii Invitational on Sunday.
The Panthers (5-3) were led by three players that scored in double figures. Daryl Schaffeld scored 15 points and hit a three-pointer with one minute left in regulation that forced overtime. Nicole Luchsinger scored a career-best 14 points and hit the free throws that tied the game, 64-64, in overtime. Kelly Lubbers scored 12 points and sparked UWM's offense by scoring all of her points after halftime.
"When you play three games in three days, emotion and mentality play such a big role," said UWM coach Sandy Botham. "And that's where Kelly helped. She came in with no fear and gave the spark to get us going."
Oregon State led by as many as nine points early in the second half and never trailed until overtime.
The Panthers finished the four-team tournament in second place, behind host Hawaii and ahead of Oregon State and Wichita State. UWM went 2-1, with its only loss coming in overtime against the Rainbow Wahine.
"This was a great confidence-booster," said Botham. "Our goal is to win a conference championship, and to do that, we're going to have to win three games in three days. We have so many players that can step up, and that's what championship teams are made of.
The Panthers return home to play Creigton on Sunday at the Klotsche Center.
