HONOLULU, Hawaii - The UWM women's basketball team posted a 74-59 win against Wichita State during the second day of the Hawaii Invitational on Saturday.
The Panthers were led by sophomore guard Corrin Von Wald, who scored a season-best 21 points, a day after scoring 20 points against Hawaii.
"They were a totally different team than Hawaii," said UWM coach Sandy Botham. "I thought that early on that it got to us. But we adjusted well."
Nicole Luchsinger added 13 points and Jessica Wilhite scored 11 for UWM. Both Luchsinger, who led UWM with seven rebounds, and Von Wald scored 11 points from the free-throw line.
"On any given night, we have someone that can come in and help us," said Botham. "Nicole did a nice job tonight and Betsy Brawner gave us some good minutes of the bench."
The Panthers overcame a slow start and scored their first points six minutes into the game. They went on to score 13 consecutive first-half points and led, 24-17, at one point in the first half. UWM led, 27-22, at halftime. The Panthers shot .412 (7-17) in the first half, compared to .226 (7-31) for the Shockers. UWM hit 12 of 15 free-throw attempts. Von Wald had nine points in the first half.
UWM never surrendered its lead in the second half.
The Panthers play Oregon State on Sunday in Hawaii.
