MILWAUKEE -
The UWM women's basketball team lost to Marquette at the Klotsche center Wednesday, 70-51, in front of a season-high 2,008 fans.
UWM (2-2) attempted to beat the Golden Eagles with their perimeter shooting. However, down the stretch Marquette's inside presence of Abbie Willenborg and Lisa Oldenburg proved to be too much for the Panthers, as the duo combined to score 34 points.
"They're just a strong team," said UWM coach Botham. "Willenborg has been their go-to player since she was a freshman, she's been on that block a long time."
Willenborg led all scorers with 24 points to go along with her 12 rebounds, three steals and one blocked shot.
Daryl Schaffeld led the Panthers in points, rebounds and assists, with 11, eight and seven respectively.
"Overall, I think we played a very good game," said Schaffeld. "It hurts that we lost, but it just helps prepare us for conference play."
Senior center Kelly Lubbers added 10 points and 3 rebounds in 15 minutes of play.
"We've had a taste of everything, that's what the non-conference season is all about," said Botham. "No one likes to lose, but it's all a learning experience for us."
The Panthers look ahead to the Montana State Bobcats, whom they face at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the Klotsche Center.
