Panther Women's Basketball Downs Northern Illinois

Nov. 28, 1999

DeKalb, Ill. - The UWM women's basketball team was led by three starters who scored in double figures as the Panthers defeated Northern Illinois, 62-57, on Sunday.

"It's a good road win against a talented MAC team," said UWM coach Sandy Botham. "We had a nice core group that did a nice job for us."

The Panthers (2-1) saw three starters score in double figures in the game.

"We have a lot of offensive weapons, and we took advantage of that," said Botham. "We had some outside shots, some penetration, some points in the post. That made us difficult to defend."

Freshman guard Jessica Wilhite led UWM with 13 points. Senior guard Daryl Schaffeld added 12 points and sophomore Stefanie Kaufmann added 10 points.

The Panthers led by six points at halftime, 28-22, but began the second half with a 13-2 run and led by as many as 19 points, 53-34, with 9:46 remaining.

But Northern Illinois counterd by going on a 13-3 run to cut the Panther lead to seven, 58-51, with 3:15 remaining. The Huskies could not cut the lead any closer than five the rest of the way.

"For us, doing the little things are important, like keeping them off the glass or taking care of the ball," said Botham.

The Huskies collected 18 offensive rebounds in the game, and forced the Panthers into 17 second-half turnovers.

Northern Illinois falls to 0-4 on the season.

The Panthers will play host to city-rival Marquette on Wednesday at the Klotsche Center. Gametime is 7:00 p.m.
