Evanston, Ill. - Junior guard Teri Stoltenberg scored a career-high 17 points as she helped lead the UWM women's basketball team to a 65-54 win over Northwestern on Sunday.
"It's a big win for us," said UWM coach Sandy Botham. "Just starting out, with it being our first game, it's on the road and against a Big Ten opponent, this is a big confidence booster."
UWM used a 10-1 run near the end of the first half to take a 22-17 lead with 3:32 remaining. UWM never trailed after that. The Panthers led by three at halftime, 26-23, and led by as many as 16 points in the second half.
Stoltenberg hit six of her eight field foal attempts and grabbed a career-best and team-leading six rebounds in the win.
"With all the shooters we have, opponents have to decide who they are going to guard," said Stoltenberg, who connected on three of her four three-point attempts.
Freshman guard Jessica Wilhite and freshman center Elizabeth Fletcher each added eight points for the Panthers.
Leslie Dolland paced Northwestern with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
The Panthers (1-0) play host to Buffalo on Wednesday at the Klotsche Center. The game marks UWM's home opener.
