Panthers Fall in Extra Innings against Northern Kentucky

MILWAUKEE – Northern Kentucky scored four runs in the top of the 12th inning to pick up a 10-6 extra-inning win over the Milwaukee baseball team on Saturday afternoon.

After trailing 6-0, the Panthers rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh on a three-run double by Charlie Marion. However, Milwaukee was limited to just one hit the rest of the way before NKU broke through with in the 12th.

Starter Aaron Boster held Milwaukee to just one run over 5 2/3 innings, while Aaron Massie tossed 3 1/3 hitless frame in relief to pick up the. Gabe Miranda and Jake Paulick each drove in three runs for the Norse on the afternoon.

"Northern Kentucky was able to put up that four-spot in the first to pounce on us," said Milwaukee head coach Shaun Wegner. "It took us a little bit to get going on Boster, he threw well against us again but then we got it going against their bullpen … we kept fighting and battling to get it to extras, but we didn't come out on top."

The first four NKU batters collected hits to open the game, building a quick four-run cushion. A pair of leadoff doubles in the third inning helped the Norse extend their lead to 6-0 against Panther starter Aric Ehmke.

"Early in the game, Ehmke fell behind, and they're a really good offense when they're ahead in the count," added Wegner. "He got better as the day progressed, and it was huge to get through six innings."

Ehmke retired seven straight into the sixth, and worked around a one-out walk to help give Milwaukee's offense a chance to claw back into the game.

Tyler Andrews followed with two perfect innings, while Logan Schulfer added 2 1/3 hitless frames out of the bullpen.

After scoring once in the fourth, the Panthers made their push in the seventh. Justin Hausser drew a bases-loaded walk, Gabe Roessler followed with an RBI to cut the deficit to 6-3. Marion, down 0-2 in the count, ripped a double into the right field corner to tie the game.

The Panthers managed just five hits on the day, including a pair from Tristan Ellis. Caden Headlee and Thomas Otto each walked twice as Milwaukee drew eight walks in total against Norse pitching.

"We have to find a way to get it done when it's not going well," Wegner concluded. "You can't rely on the same guys every day, it's the game of baseball and sometimes you just don't have it, but hopefully tomorrow we can have some more length in our lineup and come away with a victory."

NKU's four-run 12th inning was powered by four hits, a walk, and an error. Ryan Pehrson pitched a 1-2-3 bottom half to even the series at one game apiece.

Milwaukee and Northern Kentucky will play the rubber match of their series on Sunday at Franklin Field, with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
