ORLANDO, Fla. – The Milwaukee women's tennis team started off the match strong, claiming the doubles point against Connecticut before coming up short in singles action Tuesday at the United States Tennis Association Center.
The Panthers (6-8) took two out of three in doubles play against the Huskies (11-2) but were again held back by injuries in the singles lineup in seeing UConn run its current winning streak to five consecutive matches.
"After a long delay in travel, we arrived in Orlando," head coach
Mark Goldin said. "The team fought hard, earned an impressive doubles point, but fell short on singles to a strong UConn team."
Emilia Durska and
Elisa Rubio started things off, defeating Chloe Lomans and Isabelle Asenov at No. 3 doubles by a score of 6-2.
Laure Razet and
Giorgia Cavestro then finished off the Huskies at No. 2, outlasting Isabel Petri Bere and Cameron Didion 7-6 (7-3), to pick up the point to open the day.
Singles did not fare as well for Milwaukee.
Honoka Yamashita battled at No. 4, but fell, 6-4, 6-2.
Sara Simonova also competed strong, dropping a 6-4, 6-3 decision at No. 6.
"Their coach had the girls playing hard," Goldin said of Connecticut, who improved to 11-2 on the season. "And we are still dealing with injuries but looking forward to two more matches to improve before conference season."
The team continues play in Florida first thing Wednesday morning, taking on Morgan State in a match set to get underway at 7 a.m. CT.
