Panthers Settle for Scoreless Draw At Oakland

Team back at home for final three of regular season

ROCHESTER, Mich. – Despite enjoying the majority of possession and the much more dangerous chances on the day, the Milwaukee women's soccer team and Oakland played to a 0-0 stalemate Sunday afternoon at OU Soccer Field.

"This makes our fifth out of seven league games on the road, with the remaining three all at home," head coach Kevin Boyd said. "Which is nice for the future but wasn't so great for today. We lacked a little energy, and aggressiveness with the energy, specifically in the attack. I thought we did well in terms of keeping the ball – we were far better keeping the ball than we were Thursday, so that improved."

The Panthers (9-4-2, 6-0-1 Horizon League) did manage to extend two long streaks with the tie against the Golden Grizzlies (2-6-6, 1-1-4 Horizon League). In addition to improving to 13-0-5 in the all-time series against today's opponent, the team also ran its unbeaten streak in regular-season league play to an impressive 36 consecutive (29-0-7) matches – drawing even with the all-time league record.

"As a whole, our defense was sound … there's a moment or two, but there always is, it's game of soccer," Boyd said. "But as a whole, I thought our defense was pretty sound. I just didn't think we got the quality or the energy and excitement that comes with the attack that creates goals. And that's why at the end of it, we only had 10 shots. We did have six corners, but only 10 shots and no goals. And that's just quality and then energy and excitement that you have to bring to the attack to really create something. I do recognize it was their [the team] fourth half of the of the weekend and again, it's the fifth away game out of seven games, so that is a lot. I knew going into the season it was going to be very, very difficult for us to navigate this conference schedule."

The Milwaukee offense certainly created the more-dangerous chances on the day, even going down to the wire with a last-second corner kick as time expired. The final three corner kicks and two shot attempts belonged to MKE down the stretch.

OU's Maryn Weiger came up with a couple of impressive saves to post her second straight shutout. In the 59th minute, Ellie Rebmann did well to create space on the endline, finding Zoey Pagels at the doorstep. Weiger somehow managed to knock the attempt wide.

She was at her best in the 54th as well, punching Jenni Andjelic's header off a throw-in started by Kiersten White at the post, averting a waiting Mallory McGuire who was waiting to pounce on the rebound.

Despite heavy first-half possession, the biggest threat for the Panthers came in the 25th minute, when Kristina Karlof found McGuire on a break, sending the shot attempt off the crossbar and over the endline.

Bella Hollenbach was credited with just two saves on the day for her sixth shutout of the season, none bigger than one just two minutes into the day that would have changed the game quickly.

MKE wrapped up the day with the 10-8 edge in total shots, 4-2 in shots on goal, and 6-3 in corner kicks. McGuire led the way with three shots.

Up next, the Panthers return home for the final three games of the regular season slate, starting with a matchup against IU Indy Oct. 16. Game time against the Jaguars is set for 7 p.m.
