Panthers Unable to Hold Early Lead in Middle Game of Weekend Set

EDINBURG, Texas – In another closely-contested ballgame, the Milwaukee Panthers fell to host Texas Rio Grande Valley by a 3-1 score. The Panthers scored first, but three unanswered runs by the Vaqueros were enough for the victory.

Carson Hansen had Milwaukee's lone RBI on the game with a sacrifice fly in the opening frame to bring Gabe Roessler home with the first run. Justin Hausser had two hits to lead the way on offense, including a double.

Adrian Montilva got the start for the Panthers and tossed 3 2/3 innings with four strikeouts as he allowed three unearned runs to score. Logan Snow pitched the remaining 4 1/3 innings and held the Vaqueros in check without allowing a run and struck out three batters.

"We came out with good energy and bounce in the box," commented Shaun Wegner, "we were finally able to strike first but cost ourselves with defensive play and some baserunning mistakes."

After scoring the unearned marker in the top of the first on Hansen's sacrifice fly, the Vaqueros scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the frame aided by a pair of Panther miscues in the field.

"When you have the opportunity to grab a lead, you have to find a way to throw up a zero behind it, and we didn't do that," added Wegner.

The Panthers crowded the bases in the second inning with two down but were unable to level the score. Milwaukee had baserunners throughout the game including a leadoff single by Hausser in the fourth, one-out knock by Hansen in the sixth, and a two-out single by Q Phillips in the eighth but were unable to capitalize.

Montilva got the first two outs in the fourth inning, with the second resulting in a sacrifice fly to put the home team ahead by a 3-1 difference before the lefthander was lifted for Snow, who got the third out to strand a pair of inherited runners.

Snow had traffic on the basepaths in the fifth and sixth, but ultimately retired the final seven batters he faced, holding UTRGV scoreless through the last four frames.

"Logan pitched the baseball well with intent," Wegner made note of his tall right-handed reliever. "You could see him gaining steam with every out he put on the board."

Milwaukee had one last gasp in the ninth as Hansen reached on a leadoff error and made it to third before the final out was recorded.

Jacob Limas got the win for the Vaqueros as he struck out six Panthers and gave up three hits and three walks while allowing the lone Milwaukee run. Tyler Valdez secured the save with the final four innings of work, allowing just two hits and striking out three.

The first two runs in the game for Texas Rio Grande Valley came in on an error, before Armani Raygoza drove in what proved to be the game-winning run with a single to centerfield. Leadoff man Kade York drove in the insurance run for the Vaqueros with a sacrifice fly in the fourth.

Milwaukee and Texas Rio Grande Valley will matchup one more time on Sunday afternoon with first pitch slated for 12:00 p.m. at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
