Milwaukee Downed by UTRGV in Series Finale

EDINBURG, Texas – A nine-run sixth inning for Texas Rio Grande Valley proved to be too much for the Milwaukee baseball team as the Vaqueros took the third game of the weekend series by a 15-3 score.

The Panthers took another first inning lead, but UTRGV scored three in the bottom half of the frame. The score held until the bottom of the sixth when the home team plated nine runs on five hits, four walks, and an error.

"Today was another day where we got on the board early and couldn't back it up with a zero," commented head coach Shaun Wegner. "Momentum in college baseball is huge and we need to find out ways to keep it in our dugout once we grab it."

Isaac Lopez led the Vaqueros with four RBIs and was one of three players to hit home runs for UTRGV, who finished the game with 10 hits as three players, including Lopez, had multi-hit afternoons.

Zach Tjelmeland allowed the first-inning Panther run and allowed nothing further as he picked up the win and finished the game with six innings pitched and struck out four Milwaukee batters along the way.

Gabe Roessler led off the game with a walk and was bunted over to second before advancing to third on an error. Carson Hansen picked up the RBI for Milwaukee to give the Panthers a run in the opening inning for the third time this season.

Gavin Theis got the start for Milwaukee and saw his early lead evaporate, yielding a three-run home run to Martin Vazquez. Theis made it through the next three innings without allowing a run and ended the game with four strikeouts while falling to an 0-2 record.

Tristan Arnold stranded a pair in scoring position in the fifth inning without giving up a run before being charged with four runs in the sixth inning as UTRGV extended its lead. Logan Dobberstein made his Panther debut, and Tyler Deleskiewicz made his season debut before getting out of the inning.

"We had the chance to get a few guys in the game for their first career appearances, which alleviates that initial shock," Wegner added. "Now they should be ready to help contribute moving forward as we continue to find balance and roster combinations over the next few weeks."

The Panthers got two back in the top of the seventh as Evan Baptiste drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home Justin Hausser, who doubled to lead off the inning. Milwaukee added another run later with a ground ball double play to chase home the third Panther run.

Camden Kuhnke made his Milwaukee debut and was unable to record an out, as a three-run home run by Lopez ended the game.

Milwaukee will look to regroup and get back to play next weekend as the team heads back to California for a three-game series with Long Beach State. The first game will be on Friday, March 1 with the opening pitch slated for 8:00 p.m. (CT).
