EVANSTON, Ill. – The Milwaukee baseball team fell on the road to the Northwestern Wildcats on Tuesday afternoon, dropping the non-conference decision by an 10-0 score.
Â
"It was a really disappointing day," said head coach
Scott Doffek. "Our level of competitiveness was nowhere near where we needed it to be and without question that falls on me."
Â
Curtis Sheahan made just his second career start in a Panther uniform and pitched a career high five innings as he allowed five runs and struck out one batter.
Â
"I thought Curtis did a decent job, but we just did not show up and support him on either side of the ball," Doffek added.
Â
The Panthers were only able to muster a pair of hits off Wildcat pitching, with
Mark Connelly connecting on a double in the first inning, while
Tommy Benson had a double in the eighth.
Â
Aside from Sheahan,
Tyler Deleskiewicz threw the sixth inning and
Dylan Szajkovics retired the next five outs for the Panthers on the hill.
Â
Milwaukee put a pair of runners on in the top of the first as Connelly doubled and
Aaron Chapman was hit by a pitch, but the Panthers were unable to connect on a two-out hit to bring either runner home.
Â
After Sheahan retired Northwestern in order in the first, the Wildcats scored five runs in the second aided by a pair of Panther miscues in the field. Milwaukee's starter faced one over the minimum over the next two innings before allowing a pair of two-out singles in the fifth but stranded the pair on base.
Â
Deleskiewicz came on in the sixth and yielded two more runs as the Wildcats extended their lead to seven.
Â
Szajkovics came on and set the side down in order in the bottom of the seventh, including a strikeout to end the inning. Benson got a two-out double in the eight but did not advance any further as the offense stalled out again.
Â
In the bottom of the inning, Northwestern plated three more runs and evoked the run rule, to win the game by an 10-0 score with two outs in the bottom of the eighth.
Â
Milwaukee will look to bounce back in its home-away-from-home game at American Family Field beginning at 5:30 p.m. as the Panthers will take on the MSOE Raiders.
Â
The game will follow the Milwaukee Brewers-Detroit Tigers game earlier in the afternoon. Parking will be free upon arrival after the Brewers game is over, and only the main home plate stadium gate entrance will be open for Panther and Raider fans to enter the stadium.
