MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee baseball team won its annual contest at American Family Field on Wednesday afternoon, blanking the MSOE Raiders by the score of 6-0 to earn the program's 20th victory at the home of Major League Baseball's Milwaukee Brewers.
Â
"It's a great experience for our guys playing here so shout out to our administration and everyone behind the scenes putting this together for us," said
Scott Doffek. "Also, Steve Sanfilippo '05 on bringing his team over here, they're a first-class group."
Â
Nine pitchers combined to blank the Raiders in front of the 903 fans in attendance, as the Panthers improved to 9-0 all-time against MSOE. It was Milwaukee's third shutout win of the season, and first since March 1, when the Panthers beat Minnesota by a 3-0 margin.
Â
"For the most part we played a fairly clean game, we had one error that we would like back," added Doffek. "We got a bunch of guys into the game to pitch, and having length in your bench is huge and those are guys that can help us in high-leverage situations. Baseball is hard to play when you don't get in their consistently, so getting them into somewhat of a rhythm is critical to have a full roster of guys that can help."
Â
Adrian Montilva pitched the first two innings and threw a season-high two innings and struck out a season-high four batters.
Ryan Hoerter pitched a scoreless third inning and allowed just one hit in his outing.
Â
Nick Gilhaus came on to start the top of the fourth and struck out two batters without allowing a hit. Next on the mount for Milwaukee was
Johnny Kelliher, who worked around a one-out single to strike out the next two batters.
Â
The Panthers finally broke through offensively in the fifth inning with a first pitch single up the middle off the bat of
Carson Hansen.
Jack Thelen followed with a four-pitch walk before
Thomas Otto walked on four pitches to load the bases.
Â
Marcus Cline was up next and reached via error and picked up one RBI as two runs came in to score. After Cline stole second,
Ty Olejnik singled to drive in a pair to put the Panthers up by four. Two batters later,
Mark Connelly added an RBI on a base hit into centerfield to cap off the scoring in the inning at five runs.
Â
Kelliher worked through the top of the sixth inning before Milwaukee came back up to bat again, ending the game with a season-high two innings with a season-best three strikeouts. Hansen got the rally started again with a walk before stealing both second and third. Two batters later, Otto added his second RBI of the season with a base hit into centerfield to increase the Milwaukee lead to six.
Â
Mike Sullivan was next out of the bullpen for the Panthers and put two on with one down, but the next batter lined into a double play as
Nathan Ebersole snagged the ball up the middle mid-air and flipped to second for the inning-ending double play.
Â
DJ Kojis and
Sam Mathews combined to get through the eighth inning, while
Gavin Theis and
Nate DeYoung closed out the game in the top of the ninth to seal the win for the Panthers.
Â
Milwaukee will travel to Youngstown State for its next Horizon League series. The game schedule has already been adjusted due to weather in Northeast Ohio, and the series will begin on Saturday, April 28 with a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
