Whitewater Invite 2023

Panthers Bring Home Four Titles From Warhawk Invitational

Fall season continues to impress

October 07, 2023

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WHITEWATER, Wis. – The Milwaukee women's tennis team brought home a pair of singles and pair of doubles titles after a strong weekend of play in the Whitewater Invitational Friday and Saturday.

"I am so proud of the team," head coach Mark Goldin said. "It was a great weekend and the mental toughness and effort is already at a very high level for only being the second event we have played this fall."

Due to the rain the multi-team event with schools ranging from NCAA DI to DIII and NAIA ended up being played in numerous facilities: the UW-Whitewater Outdoor Tennis Complex, Whitewater High School, and Premier Fitness in Janesville and Lake Geneva Tennis.

"We have made tremendous improvements in just a few short weeks and I can't imagine how good we will be by the spring," Goldin said.

Bringing home the gold in singles draws included Nadiia Konieva at No. 1 and Babette Burgersdijk at No. 2. In doubles action, it was Laure Razet and Konieva at No. 1, while Iva Stejskalova and Giorgia Cavestro earned the championship against the field at No. 2.

Runner-ups included Razet (No. 1), Sara Simonova (No. 2), and Cavestro (No. 4).

"Laure and Sara didn't compete in the finals matches due to slight injury concerns and playing against teammates," Goldin said. "We wanted to rest up for the ITA event coming up Wednesday."

Konieva finished a combined 5-0 on the weekend, bringing home the gold after defeating Sofiia Vdovychanko from Lewis, 6-1, 6-2, and then Razet in the finals.

In doubles, she teamed with Razet to knock off Sreevally Medishetti/Anabel Aguilar (Lewis) 7-5, Jenna Home/Anastasia Rakita (Northern Illinois) 6-4, and Sofia Vdovychenko/Casey Smith (Lewis) 6-3.

Burgersdijk quickly dispatched Gracie Ha (Whitewater) 6-2, 6-0 before taking the title against Simonova.

Stejskalova and Cavestro kept getting better as the weekend progressed. They started with a 6-4 defeat of MacKenzie Lindow/Alex Repplier (Whitewater), then followed that with a 6-2 win over Alyssa Owens/Teodora Patricia (Roosevelt) to earn a spot in the title match. From there, another 6-2 win over Kellie Ha/Molly Asfeld (Whitewater) took home the gold.

Up next, the team prepares for the ITA Midwest Regional, hosted by Michigan State October 12-16.
