FAYETTEVILE, Ark. – Kate Watson wrapped up her 2022 season at the NCAA West Regionals on Thursday evening, tying for 14th in the pole vault at Arkansas' John McDonnell Field.
Watson finished with a mark of 3.96 meters in the event, putting her in a six-way tie for 14th. In the field of 48, Watson entered ranked 45th but moved up an incredible 31 spots. The jump was her second-best of the season and just shy of her personal best.
"I thought Kate had an unbelievable day," head coach
Andrew Basler said. "Her first practice jump started off a bit shaky, but she settled her nerves and had some really good jumps leading up to the competition. She put herself in a great position, clearing the bar on her first two attempts."
Watson wraps up the campaign with several impressive performances, including a personal best 4.03 meters earlier this season at the Illini Invitational which ranks second in program history. The senior was the Horizon League indoor champion in the pole vault and finished third overall at the outdoor meet.
"Coach
Zachary Schmidt had her prepared really well," Basler said. "Real proud of them both. It should give Kate a lot of confidence and momentum heading into next year. It's a great experience for her and I know she's going to have high goals heading into the championships next year."
