DAYTON, Ohio –
Jack Mahoney and
AJ Blubaugh combined to throw a two-hit shutout in game one of Sunday's doubleheader as the Milwaukee baseball team split with Wright State at Nischwitz Stadium. The Panthers took the opener 1-0 before falling 12-2 in game two.
"Jack was just fantastic," head coach
Scott Doffek said. "He really did a great job of working ahead and executing pitches. AJ was very good again as well."
Mahoney was lights out from the start in game one as he allowed just two hits across 6.0 innings of work. The lefty struck out seven and walked three as he earned his third win of the season.
The Panthers (19-28, 8-16 Horizon League) got on the board in the fourth as
Nate DeYoung doubled in
Zach Nogalski for a 1-0 advantage.
That was all Milwaukee would need as Mahoney continued to roll. Blubaugh then came on in the seventh and struck out one as he picked up his sixth save of the year.
In game two, Milwaukee struck first as
Aaron Chapman drove in
Ty Olejnik and
Justin Hausser plated Nogalski with a single for a 2-0 lead.
Wright State (25-24, 18-8 Horizon League) quickly answered with a grand slam in the bottom half of the frame and the Raiders continued to add on.
MKE was held to just four hits the rest of the way as the Raiders worked a split.
Logan Schulfer took the loss allowing seven runs in 2.1 innings of work.
"We jumped out to an early lead which was great to see," Doffek continued. "I thought [Logan] Schulfer threw the ball better than his line would say. That zone tightened up on him unfairly I thought. Their bullpen got it going and really closed that game down quickly."
Mitchell Buban and Chapman each had three hits on the day for MKE.
The Panthers will gear up to host Wright State in a three-game series beginning on Thursday, May 19.
