FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Milwaukee baseball team scored just five runs as the Panthers were swept at Purdue Fort Wayne 2-1 and 14-4 on Friday afternoon.
"We got a great start from Riley [Frey] but we left too many guys on base in game one," head coach
Scott Doffek said. "In game two, I thought [Ryan] Hoerter did a very good job and we asked too much of him. I thought we hit some balls hard but when you have two innings like that on the mound, you don't have much to say in the game."
It was a pitcher's duel in game one as
Riley Frey tossed all six innings for the Panthers. He surrendered just four hits and struck out eight, but the Mastodons capitalized twice for the lead.
Tied 1-1 the Mastodons (15-32, 12-14 HL) used small ball to put runners on the corners. Purdue Fort Wayne's Garrett Lake then singled to score a run and Milwaukee went down in order to give PFW a 2-1 victory.
In game two, Purdue Fort Wayne cashed in early, and the Panthers could not respond. The Mastodons scored four in the first inning and added three in the third frame to put MKE in a hole.
Milwaukee (18-27, 7-15 HL) battled with three runs in the first two innings, but the deficit was too much to overcome.
Nate DeYoung took the loss as he allowed three earned runs on four hits in the start.
Ryan Hoerter did a nice job in relief with just one earned run in 7.0 innings pitched for MKE.
Ty Olejnik finished 5-for-7 on the day with a pair of RBI while
Zach Nogalski had a pair of hits in game one.
The Panthers will next face Wright State in a doubleheader on Sunday, May 15. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 am CT.
