MILWAUKEE – Seniors
Nikki Milner,
Mayya Perova and
Anika Tylek tallied victories on Senior Day for the Milwaukee tennis team, and helped the Panthers to a dominate 6-1 win over the IUPUI Jaguars to open Horizon League play Saturday afternoon from Elite – River Glen.
The Panthers (6-10, 1-0) jumped out to an early lead over IUPUI (2-14, 0-1) by winning the doubles point. The Black & Gold carried that momentum into singles, and took care of business winning five-of-six singles matches.
"I'm really happy for the team today, and especially for Mayya, Nikki, and Anika," said head coach
Jason Potthoff. "For all three of them to go out there and come away with wins in doubles and singles, you couldn't ask for anything more on Senior Day. Doubles was pretty sharp, and I thought we did a good job of closing out sets and matches as quickly as we could in singles. It was nice to get off the court in a reasonable amount of time so we can get started on rest and recovery. Tomorrow will be a tough test, so we've got to come out ready to fight from the first point."
The Panthers wrapped up the doubles point quickly, dropping just five total games in two matches.
Mayya Perova and
Avery Durham finished first with a 6-2 victory, while
Nikki Milner and
Anika Tylek finished shortly after winning 6-3. Perova and Durham extend their win streak to five and 6-1 overall together. Tylek and Milner also garner a four-match win streak to move to 4-0.
Perova was the first Panther to earn a singles point for Milwaukee after defeating Christina Stankovic, 6-3, 6-3, while fellow classmate
Anika Tylek cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory.
Freshman
Avery Durham tallied her eighth win of the season, winning 6-3, 6-1 handedly over IUPUI's Sarah Lounsbury.
Milner rounded out the Panthers points by winning her match 6-3, 7-5 and close out the match for Milwaukee's first league win.
Next up, the Panthers will host a Sunday matinee against the other black & gold team of the Horizon League. First serve is set for 1 p.m. between MKE and Northern Kentucky from Elite – River Glen.
