NILES, Ohio – The Milwaukee baseball team scored three runs early, but Youngstown State capitalized on the Panthers' pitching mistakes, and handed MKE a 15-4 setback on Saturday in Ohio.
"I liked our bats all game, but we were completely non-competitive on the mound," head coach
Scott Doffek said. "Gave ourselves no chance in that ball game."
Milwaukee (12-16, 3-7 Horizon League) out-hit Youngstown State 11-10 on the day but Youngstown State punished Panthers' mistakes on the mound. Four MKE pitchers combined for 12 walks and just four strikeouts in the loss.
Conner Goodman put MKE on the board first with an RBI groundout in the first and the Panthers tacked on two more in the second for a 3-0 advantage.
The Penguins (12-14, 5-7 Horizon League) responded and got the Panthers' starter
Nick Gilhaus for seven runs across five innings pitched.
YSU continued to build its lead, adding multiple runs in the next three frames.
Mark Connelly blasted a home run in the seventh, but that was all Milwaukee could add.
Justin Hausser finished the day with three hits, going 3-for-4. Connelly,
Jake Novak, and
Aaron Chapman each added two hits apiece.
