FRANKLIN, Wis. – Purdue Fort Wayne rallied for two runs in the ninth inning to top the Milwaukee baseball team 7-6 on Sunday afternoon.
"I thought early in the game, we stung some balls that didn't fall through but overall, it was the same story," head coach
Scott Doffek said. "We couldn't' really string anything together. Ultimately, we were in a position to win the game, but we beat ourselves."
Milwaukee (11-13, 2-5 Horizon League) battled all the way back from a 5-0 deficit to take the lead 6-5 in the eighth but could not hang on the lead.
The Mastodons (8-22, 5-7 Horizon League) got the leadoff runner aboard in the ninth and after he advanced to second on a balk from
Mike Edwards, scored on a single to left. PFW then took the lead as another balk allowed the winning run to cross.
Justin Hausser put the Panthers on the board in the third as he launched the first home run of his collegiate career to left.
MKE followed with three runs in the fourth behind a two-run double from
Jake Novak and pushed across another in the fifth to tie it 5-5.
Eliot Turnquist and
Logan Schulfer kept PFW off the board as they were brilliant out of the bullpen.
Turnquist tossed 4.0 scoreless innings and struck out a career-high seven batters while Schulfer struck out the side in the eighth.
In the eighth,
Jack Thelen drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on a wild pitch and a sacrifice bunt. The catcher then scored on an error to give MKE a 6-5 advantage before PFW responded in the ninth.
Thelen was aboard three times on Sunday, drawing three walks. Novak finished 1-for-2 with a two-RBI double.
Milwaukee will next host Iowa on Tuesday, April 12. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 pm from Franklin Field. Live coverage links available on
