PROVO, Utah – The Milwaukee pitching staff issued eight walks on Friday afternoon, and BYU capitalized to hand the Panthers an 8-4 setback in the series finale.
"Unfortunately, we were down a couple of our top arms this weekend and it showed," head coach
Scott Doffek said. "At one point, we had given up seven runs on three hits. That's the game right there. We compete and battle but ran out of time."
The walks came early as Panthers' starter
Johnny Kelliher issued three straight before a BYU double cleared the bases and had the Cougars up 3-0 after one.
Tommy Benson helped MKE (4-6) get one back as he drove in
Jake Novak with a groundout to the left side, but BYU tacked on more in the fourth.
Keagon Kaufmann tossed two hitless innings before a single and two walks brought on
James Severson. The next batter doubled to empty the bases and more walks brought in another run for BYU.
In the seventh,
Aaron Chapman helped Milwaukee score a pair as he singled in
Luke Seidel and later scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 8-3.
Benson drove in his second run of the game an inning later but that was all Milwaukee could cash in as BYU (7-3) took the finale.
Milwaukee led the hit column 10-8 but allowed the Cougars too many free passes on Friday.
Chapman, Novak, and
Jack Thelen each finished with two hits apiece for the Panthers.
Milwaukee will next head to Ohio for a four-game series at Dayton beginning on Friday, March 11.
