DAYTON, Ohio –
Riley Frey threw 6.2 shutout innings as the Milwaukee baseball team locked down Dayton 6-2 on Friday night.
"I thought Riley made some really huge pitches in some tough spots today and ultimately, that's why we won," head coach
Scott Doffek said. "Extremely tough to play in those conditions the second half of the game. Good to come out and get game one of a series especially on the road."
Frey was dealing early, holding Dayton (7-5) hitless until the Flyers finally registered a base hit to open up the fifth.
Meanwhile, Milwaukee capitalized on some Flyer errors to jump in front. After a pair of singles from
Mark Connelly and
Luke Seidel, Mitch Buban reached on an error, scoring one.
Aaron Chapman then tallied a sacrifice fly to score Seidel before Buban made it 3-0 after scoring on a wild pitch.
MKE (5-6) added three more in the fourth, highlighted by a leadoff solo home run from
Jack Thelen.
Frey continued to work into the seventh before
Mike Edwards come on in relief with two outs.
The Flyers cashed in for two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but Edwards struck out back-to-back hitters to seal the win.
MKE recorded its fourth straight game with zero errors.
The Panthers and Flyers will wrap up the series on Sunday with a doubleheader at 11:00 am.
