GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Milwaukee women's basketball team battled to 10 ties and 12 lead changes with Green Bay, but seven fourth-quarter turnovers haunted the Panthers down the stretch as they fell 65-56 on the road.
"Credit to them, they are playing with a lot of confidence right now," head coach
Kyle Rechlicz commented. "I thought we really came in and competed. I was really proud of the effort that we put on the floor. Unfortunately, in the fourth quarter, we had way too many turnovers, gave up too many offensive rebounds, and missed free throws throughout the game."
It was back-and-forth early on before
Emma Wittmershaus cashed in down low for a score and followed with a pair of free throws to put the Panthers up 15-14 after one.
The Panthers' zone defense was giving Green Bay trouble inside, but the Phoenix were finding a to hit from deep, connecting on six triples in the first half.
MKE (9-13, 8-7 Horizon League) doubled up the GB in the paint, however, led by eight first-half points from
Megan Walstad and the teams headed to the half tied at 31-31.
After the break, the Panthers and Phoenix (13-5, 9-3 Horizon League) traded baskets but neither extended their lead more than four points in the third quarter.
Wittmershaus tallied four points in the third and then hit the first three field goals in the fourth quarter, but Green Bay continued to have an answer.
Tied 54-54, the Phoenix got a layup down low and took advantage of three straight turnovers from the Panthers to go up 61-54.
From there, Green Bay sealed it at the free throw line, going 4-for-6 in the final 33 seconds to hand Milwaukee its second straight loss.
MKE finished with 14 turnovers including nine in the second half. The Panthers were also just 7-for-12 (58.3 percent) from the free throw line in the loss.
Wittmershaus finished the game 7-for-10, matching her career-high with 16 points. The redshirt sophomore added four rebounds and four steals.
Miquela Santoro and Walstad also reached double figures for the Panthers, scoring 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Milwaukee continues the road trip in Michigan beginning with Detroit Mercy on Thursday, December 10 at 6:00 pm CT.
