Balanced Attack Leads Panthers Past Titans

Eight different Panthers scored in the win

DETROIT, Mich. – Four players reached double figures led by Megan Walstad's 18 points as the Milwaukee women's basketball team earned a 71-55 victory over Detroit Mercy at Calihan Hall.

"I thought our staff did a great job of preparing the team and putting them in the right positions of understanding what we were going to score off of and we executed that especially early in the game," head coach Kyle Rechlicz said.

Walstad finished 8-for-12 and added four rebounds and two assists in the win. McKaela Schmelzer (13 points), Sydney Staver (12), and Macy McGlone (10) also reached double digits.

"Megan was incredible. She was doubled teamed but found ways to get assists," Rechlicz continued. "I thought the highlight of the game was Macy McGlone. She was comfortable. She didn't play with nerves. She just went out there and kept it simple."

The Panthers (10-13, 9-7 Horizon League) got rolling in the paint early behind Walstad who scored 12 points in the first quarter alone.

Staver hit a three-pointer in each of the first two quarters and McGlone was a big spark off the bench with eight points on 4-for-5 shooting as well as five rebounds and three steals.

The Panthers built their lead to 15 points at the half behind an impressive shooting display of 60 percent (18-for-30).

Detroit Mercy (0-22, 0-15 Horizon League) scored the first five points of the second half to cut into the deficit, but the Panthers went back down low and quickly pushed the lead back to 18.

Milwaukee got to the free throw line in the fourth quarter and got back to its old ways, hitting seven of eight attempts to seal the victory.

The Panthers finished 13-for-14 from the free throw line and shot 50 percent (27-for-54) from the floor.

McGlone matched her career-high with 10 points and set new highs in rebounds (8) and steals (4). In addition to the 13 points, Schmelzer added four rebounds, one assist, and three steals.

The Panthers next travel to Rochester, Mich. For a battle with Oakland from the Athletics O'Rena. Tipoff on Saturday, December 12 is scheduled for 1:00 pm CT.
