TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona rallied for eight runs in the bottom half of the first and never looked back, handing the Milwaukee baseball team a 14-3 loss on Thursday night.
"We got our tails kicked and much of it was self-inflicted early," head coach
Scott Doffek said. "Riley [Frey] was just not himself and had a hard time getting ahead and staying ahead. Against that lineup, fall behind constantly and you will get punished."
The Panthers scored first as
Aaron Chapman doubled in
Conner Goodman in the first inning, but the 11th-ranked Wildcats quickly responded with eight runs on six hits in the bottom half.
Arizona added one in the second and three in the fourth before the Panthers plated a few more.
Mitchell Buban poked a single to left center to score
Jack Thelen, who singled, and
Luke Seidel, who reached on a fielder's choice.
Arizona finished the scoring with one more in the sixth and a final run in the eighth.
Milwaukee was outhit 15-7 and three Panthers' errors allowed a pair of unearned runs.
Riley Frey got the start against Wildcats and after the big first inning, allowed just one run on two hits in the second and third.
Nick Gilhaus worked 4.2 innings of relief and struck out six while walking none and allowing just two earned runs.
"I thought Gilly did a really nice job of handling his opportunity," Doffek continued. "He had a good mix going and kept them off balance. Tomorrow, we have to come out and do a better job of handling the environment."
Chapman finished 2-for-4 with one RBI on the day while Buban drove in two with his single.
Game two of the four-game series is set for tomorrow evening at 7:00 pm from Hi Corbett Field.
