TUCSON, Ariz. – No. 11 Arizona broke open a tight game late, scoring five runs in the seventh inning to hand the Milwaukee baseball team a 9-1 setback on Friday night.
"We let it get away from us," head coach
Scott Doffek commented. "Kind of the same story tonight as we stepped on our foot late."
Jack Mahoney toed the rubber for Milwaukee (3-2) and put together a solid six innings of work before the Wildcats rallied in the seventh.
"Really great job on the hill today by Jack," Doffek continued. "An outstanding job of mixing and working ahead all game. Their starter was dynamic. I thought we battled in the box but did overpower us at the right times."
The senior allowed just two runs on five hits through six complete frames before the first two Arizona batters reached in the seventh and Andrew Neu took over.
Arizona (5-1) took advantage of walks and Panthers' miscues, plating five runs on just three hits in the seventh. MKE recorded three walks, an error, a passed ball, and a wild pitch in the inning.
Milwaukee's lone run came in the sixth inning as
Luke Seidel and
Mitchell Buban got it started with back-to-back singles.
After the two advanced on a wild pitch,
Conner Goodman reached on a fielder's choice to plate Seidel.
The Wildcats added two more runs in the eighth to complete the scoring.
Aaron Chapman finished the game 2-for-4 while Seidel and
Mark Connelly also reached base twice.
Game three of the series is scheduled for Saturday with first pitch at 3:00 pm.
