MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Megan Walstad and
Emma Wittmershaus combined for 28 points in the second half to help the Milwaukee women's basketball team erase a double-digit halftime deficit and top Green Bay 50-48 on Monday night.
"Our team is committed to wanting to win," head coach
Kyle Rechlicz said. "It wasn't that we weren't playing hard in the first half, we were just making errors. I thought we came out with a pace and a purpose in the second half where we knew we wanted to get the ball inside."
Milwaukee (13-14 overall, 12-8 Horizon League) outscored Green Bay 17-7 in the fourth quarter and scored the final nine points of the game in the comeback win.
With just under five minutes to play, the Panthers saw a 48-41 deficit but were undeterred.
Wittmershaus knocked down a jumper and Walstad followed with a putback layup to cut the Phoenix's lead to three.
Following a missed jumper on the other end, Wittmershaus again connected and on the next possession, she was sent to the line for a chance to take the lead.
The redshirt sophomore knocked down both free ones with 1:31 on the clock, giving Milwaukee its first lead since 6:08 in the first quarter.
On the ensuing possession, defense stood tall as
Angie Cera blocked a Green Bay layup and Wittmershaus hit another free throw on the other end to put MKE up 50-48.
Green Bay (17-6, 13-4 Horizon League) had a chance to tie following an intentional foul called on the Panthers, but Cassie Schiltz missed both free throws and a final attempt from
Sydney Levy fell short as MKE secured the win.
Walstad and Wittmershaus combined to go 9-for-18 with 28 points and 16 rebounds in the second half alone. Walstad recorded her eighth double-double of the year with 14 points and 14 rebounds while Wittmershaus finished with a career-high 20 points.
Grace Crowley stepped up off the bench, totaling five rebounds, a big second-chance layup, and one assist in just over nine minutes of action.
McKaela Schmelzer added nine points, seven rebounds, and three assists in the win.
It was a lackluster first half for both teams, but Green Bay took advantage of Milwaukee droughts, allowing the Phoenix to build a 16-point advantage and 13-point halftime lead before the Panthers exploded after the break.
MKE had eight first-half turnovers but took care of the ball down the stretch with just three miscues in the final 20 minutes.
The Panthers will next hit the road for their final two games of the regular season beginning with Cleveland State on Thursday, February 24.
