Panthers Grind Out Win on Senior Day

MKE dominated the rebounding battle 33-20

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Four players reached double digits on Saturday to help lead the Milwaukee women's basketball team to a 65-57 win over UIC on Senior Day.

"It was awesome. It was a great atmosphere," head coach Kyle Rechlicz said. "A Lot of fans in the stands and a lot of support for our current seniors and for our alumni. It is always one of the most fun games of the year and great when we can get a win on these days as well.

With the victory, Rechlicz earned her 150th at the helm of the black and gold.

After a sluggish first quarter, the Panthers ramped up in the second. UIC scored on its first possession of the period, but MKE responded, rattling off a 10-0 run to pull in front by nine.

The lead reached double figures following a Megan Walstad jumper, but the Flames kept hanging around and closed it to 31-28 with an 8-0 run of their own.

Milwaukee (12-14, 11-8 Horizon League) was lights out in the third, hitting 75 percent (9-for-12) of its shots, but once again, UIC kept finding a way to stick around as the Panthers lead never reached double digits.

Miquela Santoro carried MKE, going 3-for-3 from the floor for seven points in the third.

Megan Walstad awoke in the fourth quarter, as she got to the free throw line seven times and scored 10 points.

UIC (2-22, 1-18 Horizon League) battled to within five at 56-51, but a Walstad and-one and a Santoro jumper put MKE up 10 with 1:46 to play.

MKE slowed down play and iced the game from the free throw line, going 4-for-6 in the final minute to seal the win.

Walstad finished with 18 points to lead the Panthers and added six rebounds. Wittmershaus totaled 11 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and four blocks in the win.

Santoro was a perfect 5-for-5 from the floor as she scored 12 points. Sydney Staver was also impressive, going 4-for-8 for 12 points in addition to three rebounds and two assists.

Milwaukee will wrap up its home schedule on Monday, February 21 as the Panthers host Green Bay in a 7:00 pm contest.
