MILWAUKEE – Mayya Perova,
Iva Stejskalova and
Avery Durham each picked up wins at singles for the Milwaukee tennis team, but it was the Marquette Golden Eagles who came away victorious Sunday evening from Elite – River Glen.
From the No. 1 doubles line,
Greta Carbone and
Iva Stejskalova evened the competition at one a piece after defeating Natalija Popovic and Emilija Kojcic, 6-4. With the win, Carbone and Stejskalova extend their match streak to six and remain undefeated this season.
The doubles point came down to the No. 2 line and
Mayya Perova and
Nikki Milner came up just short, falling 7-5 MU's Giulia Turconi and Tiana Windbuchler.
"The doubles point sure would have come in handy today," said Panther head coach
Jason Potthoff. "I was confident that we had three or four singles courts where we had pretty favorable matchups, but coming into the match I knew that the doubles point would have put us over the top. It came down to just a few points here and there, and we just didn't get enough of the ones we needed. I'm really proud of the squad though because everyone is battling through tough situations and making sacrifices for their team. We wanted today really badly, but we will re-focus and be ready to battle again next weekend."
Senior
Mayya Perova extended her win streak to three-straight and improved her record to 5-1 with a win from the No. 2 singles line over Emilija Kojcic, 6-3, 6-2.
MKE's
Iva Stejskalova mirrored Perova's results from the No. 3 line with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Giulia Turconi, and freshman
Avery Durham also swept from the No. 6 line, 6-2, 6-4.
The match came down to the final dual from the No. 1 line. Carbone looked to extend the dual to a tiebreaker after dropping the first set, 6-3, but was unable Popovic, falling 6-3, 7-6 (1).
The Panthers will look to rest up and bounce back next weekend with two duals in Michigan. Milwaukee will take on Wayne State University Saturday, February 19 and follow-up with Western Michigan the next day. Both matches will be held at Western Michigan with start times of 4 p.m. (CT) and 11 a.m. (CT).
