MOON TOWNSHIP, Penn. – Allie Strottman posted a shutout in her first start of the season and the Milwaukee women's soccer team got goals from
Haley Johnson and
Jelena Sever to claim a 2-0 victory over Robert Morris Sunday at the North Athletic Complex.
The Panthers (7-1, 2-0 Horizon League) struck for goals early in each half against the Colonials (4-5-1, 0-1-1 Horizon), improving to 4-0 in the all-time series against RMU with the decision.
"It was good to get a result on the road in a difficult environment," head coach
Troy Fabiano said. "Our depth continues to show as we battle through some injuries."
Strottman was credited with three saves in posting the second solo shutout of her MKE career. One of them was a big one, coming in the 17
th minute when she knocked a close-range header up-and-over the crossbar to keep the game in Milwaukee's favor at 1-0.
"Proud of the way Allie stepped in and played," Fabiano said. "She was able to come up with a nice save in the first half and did well on a couple of dangerous crosses."
The Panther offense continued its recent stretch of quick starts, finding the back of the net at the 6:21 mark of the match.
Kat Van Booven started the play, turning defense into offense when she stole the ball from an RMU player following a goal kick. She laid it off to the left to a charging
Gaby Schwartz, who sent a perfect serve to the box.
Johnson did the rest, going airborne to volley the ball past the goalkeeper and into the net for her third goal of the season.
MKE looked to add prior to intermission, but the closest it would come would be a 42
nd-minute corner kick, with
Rachel Phillpotts sending a header just over the crossbar.
The second half started strong for Milwaukee, resulting in another corner kick. Schwartz was at it again, sending the perfect ball to the near post for Sever to head in just 2:39 into the second half, the fifth of the season for Sever.
The assist for Schwartz gave her two on the day and pushed her season total to 11, a number that not only leads the Horizon League, but also tops the nation at the NCAA Division I level.
The offense kept up the pressure the rest of the way, but a third goal never did develop.
Some close calls included a pair from
Mackenzie Schill and one from
Lainey Higgins. Schill took a feed from Schwartz in the 52
nd minute and just missed the upper-90 of the far post. Then, in the 61
st minute, she turned and fired from the top of the 18 off a pass from
Rachel Phillpotts, but again narrowly missed as it went whizzing past the right post.
Higgins' close call came in the 62
nd minute, turned away at the post by a brilliant save from RMU keeper Courtney Worstell.
The Panthers ended the afternoon with advantages of 17-to-6 on shots, 9-to-3 in shots on goal, and 4-to-3 on corner kicks. Schill paced the offense with five shots; no other player had more than two.
Up next, Horizon League play continues Thursday, set to take on Cleveland State in a game scheduled to kickoff at 5 p.m.
