CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Milwaukee women's soccer team used a second-half scoring binge to blow the game open and earn a 7-0 victory over Cleveland State Thursday at Krenzler Field.
The Panthers (8-1, 3-0 Horizon League) got a goal from
Mackenzie Schill just 81 seconds into the match against the Vikings (3-6-1, 2-1 Horizon League) and then piled on in the second half to improve to 22-0-1 in the all-time series.
Schill netted her league-leading seventh goal of the season after taking a pass from
Taylor Hattori on the wing, dribbling towards the top of the 18 and firing a left-footed strike up-and-over the CSU goalie for the eventual game-winner.
With the game just 1-0,
Elaina LaMacchia was called on to make a solid save after the Vikings created a one-on-one opportunity in the 28
th minute and the MKE defense cleared up a possible goal in the 32
nd after LaMacchia left her line.
The second goal came in the 31
st minute, with
Rachel Phillpotts slotting in a corner kick from
Gaby Schwartz in front. It was her first of the season.
The Milwaukee offense got clicking quickly in the second half and it was again on a Schwartz corner. This time it was
Lesley Kiesling, redirecting the ball at the post for her fifth goal of the fall just 1:39 into the period.
Phillpotts nearly had a second in the 63
rd, only to see her blast from distance saved nicely with a diving attempt at the post.
A penalty kick at the 69:00-mark tuned on the jets, with
Jelena Sever converting the spot kick to make it 4-0.
From there, it was almost nonstop, with Milwaukee tallying four goals in a span of just 13:58 on the clock.
Following up Sever was
Lainey Higgins, redirecting a cross from
Kayla Rollins for her first of the year at the 73:52 mark. Higgins played a key role in the next, finding Kiesling for the brace after taking a pass from
Maggie Woods in the 78
th minute.
Woods then took matters into her own hands, heading in a corner kick from
Emma Famulak at the 82:58 mark to make it 7-0 and round out the scoring on the evening.
Milwaukee concluded the day with substantial advantages of 17-to-10 in shots, 10-to-2 in shots on goal, and 10-to-4 in corner kicks in addition to carrying 60 percent of possession in the game.
Phillpotts paced the offense with four shots, while Kiesling and Woods each finished with three. Kiesling led the way with the pair of goals, while Woods and Higgins each recorded a goal and an assist. Schwartz had assists on two corner kicks, upping her NCAA-leading total to 13 and has now tied Kate Megna (2006-09) for the most career assists in program history at 36.
LaMacchia (69:00/2 saves) and
Allie Strottman (21:00) combined for the shutout in goal.
