FAIRBORN, Ohio – Facing the top scoring offense in all of NCAA Division I, the Milwaukee baseball team's pitching staff shouldered the load on Friday to earn a split with Wright State on the road.
The Raiders average over 10 runs per game but behind the arms of
Riley Frey and
Jack Mahoney, Wright State was held to eight total runs in two games on Friday. The Panthers' win snapped the Raiders' streak of 23 straight victories at Nichwitz Stadium which was the longest active home streak in the country.
"We played with passion and focus from the jump today," head coach
Scott Doffek commented. "We got another quality start from Jack [Mahoney] in game two and had contributions from the entire lineup which was great to see."
The Panthers' offense did its part in game two of the twinbill, putting up four runs in the first inning and rallying for 14 total hits in an 11-6 victory.
Clinging to a 5-3 lead through four innings, Milwaukee (17-24, 14-16 Horizon League) put the game out of reach with five runs in the fifth, all with two outs.
Zach Nogalski struck first with a two-run homer to left center and after
Mike Ferri was hit by a pitch,
Jack Cavanaugh and
Joe Vyskocil followed with RBI hits.
Nate DeYoung then stepped in the box and drove in Vyskocil to make it 10-3 Milwaukee.
Jack Mahoney worked a solid six innings in game two of the doubleheader, scattering nine hits and allowing just two earned runs while striking out six.
The Raiders (23-11, 21-4 Horizon League) got to the Panthers' bullpen for three runs late, but
Andy Neu struck out a pair in the ninth to help secure the victory.
In game one,
Riley Frey tossed a gem, but the Panthers fell 2-0 after leaving six runners stranded. Frey went all six innings allowing just two hits and one earned run while walking one and striking out five.
"Riley was outstanding in game one," Doffek said. "I know we got shut out, but we were very competitive up and down the lineup."
It marked just the sixth time this season Wright State was held to two or fewer runs. No 2 Vanderbilt and No. 23 Alabama accounted for three of those games.
Vyskocil went 4-for-8 on the day with three runs batted in while both
Mitchell Buban and Cavanaugh finished 4-for-5.
Nogalski provided the big blast in the second inning and totaled two hits in game two.
Milwaukee and Wright State will meet again tomorrow for another doubleheader. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 11:00 am with live stat links available on
