DAYTON, Ohio – Thanks to an extra-innings victory late on Friday, the Milwaukee baseball team earned the chance to play for the Horizon League title. The Panthers will take on No. 1 Wright State looking for a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
Tickets for the 2021 Horizon League Baseball Championship are $10 for a day pass while Horizon League students and kids five and under are free of charge. Capacity for the 2021 Horizon League Baseball Championship will be limited to 400.
The Panthers (22-32) will meet the Raiders (34-11) who punched their ticket to the title game with wins over Milwaukee (4-3) and UIC (15-4). MKE will need to slow down the high-powered offense of Wight State, which boasts not only the top offense in the Horizon League, but the NCAA as well leading the nation in batting average (.336), on base percentage (.446), slugging percentage (.567), and scoring (10.4 runs per game).
Zach Nogalski has led the Panthers' offense so far in this year's tournament, hitting .467 (7-for-15) with three runs driven in and three more scored.
Mike Ferri has a team-high five RBI and has hit three of the team's five doubles through three games.
Milwaukee has four Horizon League Tournament titles under its belt, winning in 1999, 2001, 2002 and 2010 while adding four additional runner-up finishes. Last season's tournament was canceled but the prior season, the Panthers went 3-3 and took down No. 1 seed Wright State to advance to the Championship before falling to No. 2 UIC.
The team went 4-1 to win it all in 2010, topping Wright State twice in the Championship and Valparaiso twice on the way to the title to head to the NCAA Tournament. In 1999, MKE bounced back from a game-one loss to win four-straight contests and advance to the NCAA Regional. For the back-to-back titles in 2001 and 2002, Milwaukee went a perfect 4-0 in the tournament each season. The first and last of the four crowns came as a No. 2 seed, while the middle pair were as the No. 1.
The Panthers are now 49-39 all-time in the Horizon League Tournament.
Milwaukee and Wright State will meet at 12:00 pm CT. If the Panthers were to top the Raiders, it will set up a winner-take-all championship immediately following the first game. All links can be found on
