Tennis Heads to Horizon League Championships

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Milwaukee tennis team will take on No. 2 seed Youngstown State in the Horizon League Semifinals on Saturday, May 1 from the Schwartz Tennis Center hosted by Purdue.

Last Time Out: The final regular season series against Cleveland State promised high energy and emotion and the Panthers fulfilled that promise. A spot into the Horizon League Championships was at stake and with series sweep, Milwaukee earned the No. 3 overall seed into the league tournament.

The Panthers won 4-3 on both days with Agata Jurczak clinching the match for the Black & Gold Saturday and Greta Carbone winning in a nail-biting tiebreaker on Sunday.

The Semifinal Matchup: YSU finished the regular season 15-9, 8-2 overall. Their two losses in conference came from UIC and Northern Kentucky.

Both Tamara Teufl (8-11, 3-7) and Cecelia Rosas (14-7, 7-3) earned second-team All-Horizon, competing from the No. 1 and No. 2 singles line throughout the entire season.

The MKE vs YSU match up opened the 2021 league season with the Penguins taking the series, 2-0. The Panthers fell short in the first match, 4-3 and lost the following day, 6-1.

League Honors: Freshman Greta Carbone was named 2021 Horizon League Women's Tennis Freshman of the Year and first-team all-league.

Carbone complied a 16-4, 10-2 HL overall record, with 15 of those wins coming from the No. 1 singles line. The 15 wins is also second-most in the league from the No.1 line – one behind Player of the Year Miruna Vasilescu (CSU). The only conference losses came from two-time Player of the Year Margita Sunjic (NKU) and this year's Player of the Year, Miruna Vasilescu.

Double Trouble: Seniors Anna Daniel Fuentes and Agata Jurczak earned the final league Doubles Team of the Week for the week of April 26.

The senior duo dropped just three games in doubles play against Cleveland State last weekend, going 2-0 and helping the Panthers to a sweep over the Vikings. On Saturday, Daniel Fuentes and Jurczak won 6-1, then 6-2 the next day over Bethany Yauch and Gaby Shoenberg from the No. 3 doubles line. Together, they finished the regular season 13-5, 6-3 HL overall.

Saturday's the Day: The No. 3 Panthers and No. 2 Penguins will face off at 10 a.m. (CT) from the Schwartz Tennis Center hosted by Purdue. Live stats will be available HERE.
