ATHENS, Ohio – The Milwaukee baseball team had opportunities in both games of Saturday's doubleheader, but could not take advantage and fell to Ohio 3-1 and 6-4 on the road.
"We had two quality starts out of our guys today that put us in good position, it was just unfortunate that we did not capitalize," head coach
Scott Doffek commented."
The Panthers (0-6) struck first in game two as singles from
Nate DeYoung and
Marcus Cline drove in runs in the first and third innings.
Ohio (5-3) responded with three in the bottom half of the third and another off a solo homer, but Milwaukee found the tying runs in the sixth.
Jack Kraus scored on a sacrifice fly and
Luke Seidel singled in
Mike Ferri to knot it at 4-4.
The Bobcats regained the lead in the bottom half of the sixth, however, as two unearned runs crossed and Milwaukee could not respond, falling 6-4.
Nick Winter scattered three hits and struck out five, allowing just one earned run across 4.0 innings.
The Panthers outhit Ohio 9-7 in game two, but four fielding errors hurt Milwaukee as the Bobcats scored four unearned runs.
Mike Edwards was off to a solid start in game one, surrendering just one run through 4.2 innings, but after his exit, some mistakes on the mound allowed two more to cross.
Milwaukee made some noise in the seventh as DeYoung scored after leading off with a single to cut it to 3-1, but that was all the Panthers could push across.
"We had some opportunities to get a few more runners in from third but didn't get the job done. That hurt us because it puts so much more pressure to be perfect on the other side of the ball," Doffek commented.
Seidel and DeYoung each finished with three hits and an RBI on the day. Kraus went 2-for-3 with a double in game two of the twinbill.
"Right now, its routine things that are hurting us," Doffek said. "It's early in the season but as a staff, we have to have our guys more ready to execute."
Milwaukee and Ohio will wrap up the four-game series tomorrow with a 11:00 am first pitch from Athens. Live stats can be found on
