MILWAUKEE, Wis. – With Horizon League play right around the corner, the Milwaukee tennis team will wrap up non-conference play against Eastern Illinois and UW-Whitewater this weekend from River Glen Elite. at 1 p.m.
Last Time Out: The Black & Gold split matches last weekend, ending their four-match win streak. On Saturday, the Panthers fought up and down the lineup for a complete 5-2 win over North Dakota.
Squared up at two points apiece, the Panthers earned key wins from
Greta Carbone,
Nikki Milner and
Iva Stejskalova to win the match. Both Carbone and Milner went to three sets, but won the final set to clinch the match. Meanwhile, Stejskalova won in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5 over UND's Angela Georgieva.
The following day, MKE came up just shy to Northern Illinois, falling 4-3. The Panthers picked up an early point sweeping doubles play, but the Huskies rallied back in singles to take the match.
Anna Daniel Fuentes picked up her sixth singles win with a three-set thriller win over Fernanda Naves, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5(4). Junior
Mayya Perova picked up the third point for the Panthers with a comeback win over Anastasia Rakita, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
About Eastern Illinois: Entering the weekend, the EIU Panthers come in at 1-4 with a win over Olivet Nazarene.
The young EIU roster consists mostly of underclassman, but Rachel Papavasilopoulos garners most of the experience for the Panthers. In 2019, Papavasilopoulos was named to the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) First Team and Women's Tennis Player of the Year. She is 5-0 from the singles line so far this season, and is teamed up with Christine Gouws in doubles and the pair are 3-0 from the No. 1 doubles line.
EIU and MKE have matched up just three times throughout the years, with EIU taking all three matches. Last time out, EIU squeezed by with a 4-3 victory.
About UW-Whitewater: Since Milwaukee's 7-0 beatdown a little less than a month ago, the Warhawk tennis team have compete against Northern Illinois and Millikin. The Warhawks sit at 1-3 so far.
Double Trouble: Doubles play has played a pivotal role the Panthers success. MKE holds a .762 winning percentage with a 16-5 record in doubles play. Perova and Milner lead the team with a 6-1 record from the No. 3 line, while Carbone/Stejskalova and Daniel Fuentes/Jurczak are 5-2.
Serving Up Awards: MKE swept Horizon League awards with
Greta Carbone earning Singles Player of the Week and
Mayya Perova and
Nikki Milner earning Doubles Team of the Week, for the week of February 22. This is a first for Carbone, and a first for Perova and Milner together.
Carbone and Daniel Fuentes Making Some Noise: Both
Greta Carbone and
Anna Daniel Fuentes are 6-1 from the singles line. Daniel Fuentes has been consistent and dominating from the No. 4 line, while Carbone is 5-1 since moving up to the No. 1 line.
Next Up: Milwaukee will begin league play starting with Youngstown State, March 13-14. The Panthers will be on the road back-to-back weekends before finally coming home on April 3.
