Jaguars Snap Long Milwaukee Streak In 1-0 Defeat

MKE looks to start new one next game

MILWAUKEE – IUPUI scored in the 52nd minute and then held off the Milwaukee women's soccer team to claim a stunning 1-0 victory Wednesday afternoon at Engelmann Stadium.

The Panthers (3-1) outshot the Jaguars (2-0-1) by a 14-to-10 count on the day, but never found any rhythm on offense and could not find the equalizer in the closing minutes.

"Give credit to IUPUI, they had a chance and put it in the back of the net," head coach Troy Fabiano said. "We just seemed a little off today and that is something that we have to go back to the drawing board with. This group is not used to losing. Hopefully we get this out of our system and we move on. We just couldn't get into any rhythm, which was a factor of IUPUI and us just not being good today."

The loss snaps an incredible streak, handing Milwaukee a defeat in regular-season Horizon League play for the first time since September of 2016. The school and league-record streak ended at 36 (33-0-3). It also brought an end to MKE's regular-season winning streak at home, which also dated back to 2016 and ended at 31 (29-0-2).

"We seemed off from the first whistle," Fabiano said. "That is something that we will have to evaluate. Like I said, give credit to IUPUI for them playing their system and working hard. But we just couldn't keep the ball and struggled to gain possession and weren't dangerous."

The first half did not feature much of a threat either way, with Jelena Sever accounting for her team's only shot on goal, coming off a free kick in the 24th minute.

The Jags struck for the eventual winner following a yellow card, turning the free kick into a goal on a flicked header by Elizabeth Bueckers at the 51:28 mark.

The Panthers pushed to find a goal, but passes ended up out of bounds or went for goal kicks too often, hurting their chances.

McKenna Stratton tried to sneak a redirect of a free kick inside the far post, but was denied in the 80th minute. Sever's header off a corner kick in the 87th minute was blocked in front and Mackenzie Schill had her attempt on a tough angle saved in the 89th minute on MKE's final threat.

The team returns to action March 10, traveling to take on Cleveland State in a game set to kick off at 11:30 a.m. CST.
